Wellington — Auction House Platform

The Challenge

The client's auction house operations were fragmented across spreadsheets, email, and manual processes. There was no system for real-time bidding, payment processing was handled offline, and managing consignors, buyers, and lot catalogues was error-prone. This limited the number of auctions they could run and created risk around bid integrity and financial transactions.

Our Approach

We mapped every operational workflow end-to-end before writing any code. The highest-risk areas — real-time bid integrity, payment reliability, and auction timing — drove the architecture decisions. We chose Django with WebSocket support (Daphne) for live bid updates and React for a responsive backoffice UI, deployed on AWS EC2 with Nginx and Gunicorn.

The Solution

A full-stack production platform featuring real-time bidding via WebSockets, a React backoffice for managing lots, consignors, buyers, and auction scheduling, integrated payment processing, and role-based access with audit logging. Infrastructure was hardened with Cloudflare DNS/SSL (Full strict mode), SSH key rotation, database credential management, and AWS security group configuration.

Results

  • Consolidated all auction operations into a single platform, replacing fragmented manual workflows
  • Real-time bidding with WebSocket connections ensuring bid integrity under high traffic at auction close
  • Automated management, consignor tracking, and payment processing reduced operational overhead
